How to Be Single A Novel Liz Tuccillo 9781501140648 Books

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend, who recommended it as a short and easy read. The book is short, but I found it difficult to get through. This book features 4 women of varying personalities and careers, all of whom are single. I found the primary character somewhat awful, and my dislike for her made me want to skip ahead. Honestly, I only really felt like I would be able to tolerate one of the women in real life. The women are clearly financially stable with solid relationships with others, yet none seem self aware or really empathetic (except maybe Ruby). And even when they do support one another at the end, I found it difficult to discern how much of their actions were generous or selfish. There was good character development and it was well written. I did learn a few things about other cultures, though I am not sure how broadly applicable the anecdotes shared are to the other cultures they are meant to represent. Honestly, it just wasn't my favorite book, and I wouldn't likely recommend it to anyone.

How to Be Single A Novel Liz Tuccillo 9781501140648 Books Reviews

I like a lot this book. The stories about different single woman were really funny, interesting but most of all touching. Also, i loved the final message. The movie was like a funny romantic comedy but the book is way deeper in a topic that bother every woman
My wife read this when she didn't want to talk to me and she seemed to like it. But joke is on her the book ends and now she has to talk to me )!
It was a fun summer read for me! I have not been single for a while, so it was interesting to see single women's perspective on dating when you are 30+. Some parts are grotesque and a bit inaccurate from the medical perspective (e.g. the sperm donor insemination for one of the characters) but I'm just getting picky... It you crave entertainment and a bit of insight into the dating scene, then I think you will like it.
I really enjoyed this book, not because it gave me answers and it didn't, and I didn't expect any, but because the book allows the single women over 30-something to come to a virtual congregation and share their experiences. There is no Cinderella affairs, the books tells it as is, the harsh realities of life, and the challenges single women over certain age face. I used to feel that I was cursed or destined to be alone, now I know that my situation and pain are shared by many, and across the globe. The book doesn't give me answers on how to divert my fate, but it makes me feel less alone in this, and that itself gives me much comfort and strength to continue on.
I wanted to love this book but didn't. While I was initially sympathetic to the female characters and their struggles, some of the plot twists were silly and seemed unnecessary, like when they into a bar brawl, which was frankly pretty dumb. Also, I felt that the characters of Julie and Alice were overdeveloped while Serena and Ruby's characters remained kind of shallow and not as deeply explored. Not as good as it could have been, but might be a pleasant afternoon read.
Love, love, LOVED!!!! Saw the movie first, so expected the book to follow in the same vein as the movie...and I am so glad that the book is so incredibly different than the movie! The book follows a woman - I believe to be in her late 30s? - as she literally travels the globe to try to understand love and romance. I don't know if it was Tuccillo's intention for this to be eye opening and revealing to women (and men) in the United States, as many of us seem to live in a bubble and don't really understand what's happening globally, but that's precisely what HTBS did for me. Funny, semi-realistic, poignant. Will read again. Will take away new self-realizations when I do.
I saw the movie and liked it, so I decided to read the book. I described the book as 'full of surprises" simply because it is nothing at all like the movie. Other than the fact that four of the women are single (one is married with kids, but separates from her husband during the book) and one character shares the same name as a character in the movie, nothing is the same. The plot and characters are completely different than the movie and I'm not even sure how they even relate the book and the movie to each other. They are completely different entities. I've actually never seen a movie that's supposedly based on a book that is so completely unlike the book. So, I did find the book interesting, but if you are looking to read it because you liked the movie, you'll find absolutely nothing the same in it. Just be forewarned.
